Two years after I had my son, I was diagnosed as having Bipolar Type II. Basically, after I had him, and I went back to work, I got better for a bit, and then it got bad again. And then it got better for a bit, and then it got bad again.

Interviewer: So wh – when you say you got bad, what was happening?

Depression. Really bad depression, where I felt like I wanted to physically harm myself. And I was hospitalised twice. And the second hospitalisation, they basically said to me, ‘This is your file. You’ve been any – every antidepressant there is. Nothing’s really working for you.’ And the doctor said, ‘You know what? I kind of want to throw this out and start over, and try and figure out what’s really going on with you, because the diagnosis of depression – like, we’re not – there’s nothing that’s helping you.’ So she looked at my medical history, and she felt that I was Bipolar Type II. So I was put on a mood stabiliser. And that actually changed things significantly.

Interviewer: Did that – did that help?

It helped a great deal. I kind of felt like, ‘I am finally taking a pill that works for me.’
